Book Signing for Rockefeller's Cleveland
Forest Hill resident Sharon E. Gregor has written her second book for Arcadia Publishing. Titled Rockefeller's Cleveland the book draws on a series of historic postcards to identify and illustrate the many landmarks and sites in Cleveland that have an association with John D. Rockefeller and "captures the visual panorama of a dynamic city that literally reinvented itself in the 1800's and in doing so emerged a major business and industrial center." The book is available from local bookstores or from Arcadia Publishing.

Gregor will be at book signings on Saturday June 5th, 2010 at Borders in Cleveland Heights at Severance Center from 2-4 PM and Tuesday June 29th, 2010 at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lyndhurst at Legacy Village at 7 PM.

Gregor, coordinated the effort that placed the 81 Rockefeller homes on the National Register of Historic Places. She is a founder of the Forest Hill Historic Preservation Society, served as its first president, and recently chaired the City of East Cleveland's historic preservation board.

Nocturnal Visitor to Forest Hill
Forest Hill resident and outdoor enthusiast David A. Richardson captured the image of a coyote visiting Newbury Drive early one November morning using a backyard trail camera. Coyote sightings have been reported in Forest Hill before, but now we have confirmation. Forest Hill is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife and we plan to feature more images on our site soon. If you have a photo you would like to contribute, please email it to President@FHHO.org with a brief description.

Community Improvement Awards Recognize Forest Hill
The 32nd Annual Community Improvement Awards (CIA), sponsored by the City of Cleveland Heights, were held in September 2007. The awards recognize efforts to improve the city’s physical environment and preserve its excellence. CIA residential winners included the DeVito residence (Chelsea Drive) and the Dross/Ladouceur residence (Glynn Road). Chelsea Drive and Hollister Road received Community Improvement Street Awards as well. Congratulations to all the Forest Hill residents recognized by the CIA program for making Cleveland Heights a better place to live!

The Euclid Bluestone
Many people know that portions of Cleveland were quarried in the past because of various place names (think Yellowstone Road or the new Bluestone development on Mayfield in Cleveland Heights). In fact, our original sidewalks in Forest Hill were made of locally quarried Euclid bluestone and John D. Rockefeller had a quarry in what is now part of Forest Hill Park.

Joseph T. Hannibal, Benjamin A. Scherzer and David B. Saja of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History recently published a paper titled “The Euclid Bluestone of Northeast Ohio: Quarrying History, Petrology, and Sedimentology.” Although portions of the paper are fairly technical (but nonetheless interesting), the section on the history of these local quarries is more accessible. You can read the article here.

Eastwick Block Party a Success Despite the Weather
The Eastwick Home Owners planned their block party for August 25. Perhaps the fact that it was the 13th should have given us pause. The weather was iffy, and we alternated between thinking we should have it inside or outside. As soon as we decided "outside" and moved all the food back out, there was a cloudburst that we waited through in nearby garages. But after that it was all sun. And after the ribs and the sweet potato pies, photographer James Doss got a picture of us in our Eastwick Home Owners T-shirts.

2007 Burlington Woodlot Cleanup A Success
This year’s cleanup of our woodlot at the corner of Burlington and Mayfield was an unqualified success! The weather was flawless (in a spring that has been less than perfect) and a good time was had by all. Thank you to all of our neighbors who stopped by to help and especially to David Richardson and Sally Miller for coordinating the event. Holiday Lights Shine in Forest Hill
Holiday spirits and unusually warm weather have combined to make this winter lighting season particularly festive in Forest Hill, inspiring local amateur photographer and association chairman Dick Secor to record the display. [Click here for more of Dick’s holiday lighting photos]
